Announcements

This Welcome Page appears to have become more of a blog for Chesterfield, its environs and members 'off piste' events! Perhaps this is because we are not walking at present due to floods, holidays and stage scenery painting. Normal service will be resumed - eventually!

The Ancient Order of

The Fairfield and Avondale Retired Teachers and Lecturers Society Plus One (Walking Section)

Constitution

Mission Statement: To boldly go where many walkers have gone before but to do it slower, admire the view on regular occasions, and feel empathy with nature and all its bounty.

Rules:

  1. The Society shall be known as the Fairfield and Avondale Retired Teachers and Lecturers Society Plus One (Walking Section). Herein referred to as FAARTALS.
  2. The Head Office of FAARTALS will be Fairfield Rd Chesterfield to where all applications for membership (and complaints) should be addressed.
  3. The Chairman of the Society will normally be the most grumpy and most venerable member of the Society and will be known as the Chief Faartal. On regular occasions he or she will be obliged to wear the revered red shoes of Saint Petronilla, the patron saint of mountain travellers.

  1. Three members shall constitute a quorum and shall be sufficient to amend the constitution and take all other decisions regarding the running of the Society.
  2. The Chief Faartal's decisions will always be accepted especially when he is wrong. All contentious matters will be discussed democratically before being ruled upon by the Chief Faartal.
  3. A Walking Adviser will be appointed to determine routes for forthcoming walks. He or she will be responsible for the good conduct of the walk and any mis-direction may lead to his/her position being put to the vote of members and /or his/her role being taken over by the Chief Faartal and/or his/her spouse. In such cases torches should be provided in case of late arrival back to base.
  4. Until further notice the Walking Adviser will also be the Chief Photographer and Archivist of the Society.
  5. There will be no Secretary as all comments passed by members on walking excursions are to be immediately forgotten especially if they are deep and thought provoking.
  6. There will be no Treasurer, as financial gain will be frowned on by all members. Shared purchases of food and drink after any sojourn will be settled amicably between participating members on the spot.
  7. Each member will be responsible for providing his or her own sustenance during the course of each adventure.
  8. The Chief Faartal in association with the Walking Adviser will determine the time and place and duration of any break for nourishment.
  9. On completion of each excursion members may retire to a hostelry for further nourishment and civil conversation.
  10. Members are expected to attend a requisite number of events and hostelry stops during the course of each month. The exact number will be discussed by the membership before a decision is made by the Chief Faartal.
  11. During the course of each adventure members are expected to adhere to the following code: a) The view is to be admired where appropriate and commented on at regular occasions. Stops for this purpose are to be in the ratio of 4 :1 uphill to downhill. b) All birds are to be commented upon and any unusual sitings are to be referred to the Avian Adviser at Avondale Rd. c) Butterflies, moths, insects and all minor forms of nature are to be pointed out to the Chief Photographer, as well as unusual cloud formations, vistas or other aspects, which stir the emotions. He/she will record such images for posterity. d) Flowers, trees and all other forms of nature should also be brought to the notice of the assemblage on regular occasions and admired or dismissed as appropriate.
  12. Membership is by invitation only and is usually granted on a probationary basis for the first 3 months. If accepted at the expiration of this period, confirmation of membership will be sealed by the production, by the new member, of ample supplies of cake or similar sweetmeats.
  13. Temporary membership, on a day-by-day basis, may be granted to younger family members providing they have read and fully agree with this constitution. They will be responsible for their own sustenance and well being.
  14. Each member is responsible for his or her own safety and comfort. Appropriate footwear and waterproofing should be on hand (and feet) at all times. Silly hats can only be worn during periods of inclement weather or excessive sunshine.
  15. Expeditions will normally commence at around 10 a.m. and are designed to be completed to enable access to food well before the normal 2 p.m. deadline.
  16. Wherever possible maps are not to be used, but if necessary they should be read upside down. 4 miles is looked upon as being the optimum expedition length.
  17. An Annual General Meeting will be held early each New Year to assess the performance of the officials and consider their reappointment. The meeting is to be held on Kinder Scout as near dawn as possible and will require the necessary quorum for any decisions to be implemented.
